Miyoko Takahashi has been raised knowing that duty and family honor are the most important things in the world… except in post-war Japan, that world is gone. New laws are in place, giving women heretofore unheard of freedoms. “Modern” ways of behavior are catching hold, causing tradition to be questioned.
How can Miyoko find balance between the secret desires of her heart and her duty to family? More than her own happiness is at stake; her family’s honor and livelihood will be threatened if she does not obey.
In a country shaken by war, by its aftermath, and by the earth itself, Miyoko learns that strength comes from yielding, and honor is found in the most unlikely places.
